Odessa, I’m proud of YOU ALL! (25/06/2011)

by Katerina Zarubina

The only day in Odessa – 25 June 2011 – was remarkable for a basket of fruitful moments. Each single moment was a delicious toping for another one. Surprisingly, at the end it turned out to be the tastiest desert of the day.

Our morning started at 5 am. Early, isn’t it? JHow do you think what was the first place to visit for early bird travelers? Right, McDonalds.  We approached it, waiting for the door to be opened at 5:30 am. More and more people were coming and pulling a closed door. In 10 min there was a pretty big crowd. It reminded me at once the opening of any new Apple store, when fans gather a day in advance.

Being awakened with a strong coffee we continued with a tram to one of the local Odessa beaches.  During our way we got acquainted with a talkative friendly Odessit-man in retirement, who showed us the shortest distance to our destination point. Also Odessa tram amused us by the typical things you can notice here.

Morning at 6 am on the beach is worth watching: the sun reflected on the surface of calm and clear water, a few people enjoy early time and nobody is offering you pakhlava or seeds JWe had wonderful hours listening mostly to the whispering of the sea.

Then we met our fellow Toastmasters from Best Odessa Speakers Club. They conducted Inner Club Speech Contest where 9 speakers competed to show the best results. Honestly, I was impressed and amazed by the top quality performances in Russian. The topics easily could touch the souls even of hard-hearted people starting from two opposite human natures like thick vs. slim inner selves, friend vs. enemy inside and reaching to such philosophy as “what if” and business like love. The atmosphere was more than friendly and supportive, it radiated care and trust. I caught a thought that we have the strong and steadily growing Russian Club, I’m proud we have it in Odessa and I am pleased you are, guys, so professional! ODESSA IS ALIVE and will be! Especially, it was a pleasure to welcome the new Officers team. I wish you to contribute enthusiasm and a part of your soul to the Club’s life in the coming year.

And here we are including the Winners:

1st place – Yuriy Stanchak “Business like Love”

2nd place – Igor Solodov “My Friend is My Enemy”

3rd place – Valeriya Dukhopelnikova “Possibilities of Opportunities and Opportunity of Possibilities”

Special thank you goes to my travel-mates: Tanya Kiseleva, Vlad Kiselev and their daughter Yulya for GREAT COMPANY JI’m thankful to Dmitriy Voitko who helped us through the day and shared our emotions on “Экзотическийаттракцион– канатнаядорога” and gave us a helpful advice on bicycle rent JWe went by bicycles through the Health road and were pretty wet then, but enormously happy JLet me express deep appreciation to Katerina Bakova who hosted us for a tasty meal and tea in her cozy warm apartment!

The last toping of the desert ended where started JRight - in McDonalds where we waited for the train. I went asleep fast with a pleasant thought:

Today is tomorrow we promised to act yesterday! Odessa, you have Kiev caring helpful hand!                                                                     Thank you for being, creating and spreading magnetic spirit ;)

7th Annual All Ukrainian Speech Contest (16/04/2011)

by Alex Sheremet

16 April 2011, Klovsky Lyceum — It was the All Ukrainian speech contest, the biggest event in the community of Toastmasters Ukraine.

More than 140 people have attended the event and witnessed 13 articulate and very creative speeches delivered by representatives of 7 Toastmasters Clubs.
The winners of the contest were:
First place – Evgenia Poluektova, with speech titled “Too much information”, Chamber Toastmasters Club, Kyiv
Second place – Ilona Postemskaya with speech titled “The biggest evil”, Chamber Toastmasters Club, Kyiv
Third place – Zoya Gulko, with speech titled “This is Her Future”. Toastcraskers Toastmasters Club, Kyiv

The wining speech described a life of a modern intellectual worker, who gradually gets overwhelmed with all the events and messages from the surrounding world. Its message was to limit the information flow, and only pay attention to things that matter the most.

The topics were diverse and interesting, the speakers delivered thought provoking points of view. There was a place for various emotions, seriousness, horror, and loud laughter.

A panel of 8 judges from different clubs evaluated contestants. The speakers were acknowledged to be the top performers in their clubs during local speech contests. Criteria used in judging included speech content, organization, voice quality and body language.

Both participants and spectators enjoyed the event. We want to thank the organizers and sponsors, which are

Mykola Latansky – prominent Toastmaster and life-long sponsor of Toastmasters in Ukraine

7th Annual All-Ukrainian Toastmasters Speech Contest. This one is my 2nd in fact. It worth participating, fellows, either you win or lose. The contest was enriched with a lot of new experiences and emotions.

And now I’m waiting for choosing the order of my performance. Where is my bang? All the balls are pulled out from the basket and the only left was the 5th one. It seemed a pretty good destiny “choice”.

I was sitting next to other contestants listening to one speech changing another. At that very moment it was a great desire to scream out how very muchlike salsa in addition to tango. The only speech I’d like to perform then is to dance and to let my body speak. However, suddenly my mind caught the vivid reasons why work can be the biggest evil in my life. In essence, I reflected on my willingness to be at least self-employed and work for the idea I believe in. Meanwhile, my stomach started giving the sings that it wouldn’t mind to take some tasty lasagna. Thus, I had to come it down and rebuke mildly: “Even now it’s all about food for you!”

At last my time stroke to perform “25. Watch out!”. So many times rehearsed, so many times revised and remade, so many efforts – and the resistance feeling of what I had and what I’ve got now was telling me I’ve wasted a lot of my non-renewable resource. Now my tricky consciousness woke up and asked: “Do you want to be a star?” I realized that in fact I didn’t want to be a star. I wanted to go to LAS VEGAS!!! Now I do as well. Very much. And here I remembered Lyubomyr telling us about Michael Jordan: “It doesn’t matter how many winning shuts you missed. Without them it would be impossible to play so many victorious games.” I started to save my money in the honeypot J It was useless to stack my head with too much information that all efforts were pointless. This is not her, his or their future. This is my future I want to live as if tomorrow would never come.

One day in September my friend’s friend will ask me in FB: “What’s up, girl? How was your LAS VEGAS? ;)

This is my future. It is fantabulous either I win or lose. And what is yours?
